The complete upload workflow
1
Create your Shutterstock Contributor account

Use the Contributor portal โ€” not the regular Shutterstock marketplace. You must be at least 18 years old and only upload content whose copyright you own.

2
Prepare your files before uploading

One minute of checking prevents avoidable rejections.

  • You created the image and own the copyright
  • Use JPEG or TIFF at a minimum of 4 megapixels
  • Check sharpness at 100% and remove dust spots or obvious artifacts
  • Avoid excessive noise, compression, filters or extreme editing
  • Select the strongest variations โ€” don't upload many nearly identical frames
3
Upload through your Contributor dashboard

Click Upload or +Add, then drag and drop your images into the portfolio section.

  • Web upload supports up to 100 files at once
  • Files must be under 50 MB for direct web upload
  • Uploaded content must be submitted within 21 days or it is automatically removed
4
Write a clear description
Metadata for people โ€” not for the algorithm

Write one factual, natural sentence in English that accurately explains what is happening in the image.

โœ“ "A colorful fishing boat anchored in a calm Mediterranean harbor at sunset."
โœ— Do not invent context, mention unrelated locations, or add trending words just to gain visibility.
5
Add 7โ€“50 keywords

Use precise, relevant search terms that describe the subject, mood, setting and context. Shared metadata can be applied in batches, but every image must remain accurate.

  • Minimum 7 keywords, maximum 50
  • Order by relevance โ€” most important first
  • Use specific terms: "fishing boat" not just "boat"

6
Select category and location

Choose the closest matching category, not the broadest one. Category 1 is required; Category 2 is optional and should represent a genuine secondary theme.

  • Location refers to the photographed subject โ€” not your current location
  • If you add a location, it must match the image, title and release information
  • For editorial content, date and place also belong in the title
7
Choose: Commercial or Editorial?

This choice determines which permissions and restrictions apply to your image.

Commercial

Can advertise, promote or sell a product, service or business.

Recognizable people need model releases. Logos and trademarks are generally not accepted.

Editorial

Illustrates news, education and subjects of public interest.

May include logos and recognizable people, but cannot promote a product or service.

Ask yourself: Could a brand use this image in an advertisement? If yes โ†’ Commercial.
8
Commercial content: make it legally clean
  • Attach a valid model release for every recognizable person โ€” even yourself
  • Private property, artwork, graffiti and tattoos may require a property release
  • Remove or avoid visible logos, company names, product names and trademarks
  • Avoid copyrighted works or locations with known restrictions
Releases must be attached during submission โ€” they cannot be added after approval.
9
Editorial content: document, don't stage

Editorial images document or illustrate real-world stories. Do not pose or direct subjects. Avoid material alteration โ€” basic cropping, exposure adjustment and black-and-white conversion are acceptable.

Editorial titles follow a strict format:

CITY, COUNTRY โ€“ MONTH DAY, YEAR: What is happening in the image.
Example: TEL AVIV, ISRAEL โ€“ JULY 17, 2026: People walk through a busy outdoor market in the city center.

Use the real capture date โ€” not the upload date.
Some concerts, sports events, fashion shows and venues may require press credentials or permission.
10
Attach releases and submit for review

In the editor: Releases โ†’ + โ†’ Upload New Release. Complete every required field before clicking Submit.

  • Submit moves your files to Pending status
  • If Submit does nothing, look for a missing field or a keyword highlighted in red
  • Approved content may take up to 72 hours to appear on the marketplace
11
Review results and learn from every rejection

Fix the stated issue before submitting a corrected version.

Focus / Noise
Technical quality issue โ€” blurry, noisy or over-compressed
Metadata
Inaccurate title or keywords don't match the image
Trademark
Visible logo or trademark in commercial content
Release
Missing or invalid model or property release
Editorial
Wrong usage type or incorrect title format

โœ… Before you click Submit โ€” check this list

7โ€“50 relevant keywords selected
At least one category selected
Commercial or Editorial usage is correct
All required releases are attached
No missing field, spelling warning or red error remains
